Uncommon Good

Uncommon Good located in Claremont, operates programs to ensure that the poor receive quality health, legal and educational services. Its Adopt an Angel program and Open Court Partnership support idealistic young doctors and lawyers who devote their careers to serving the disadvantaged. Its Clinic to College program is designed to break the intergenerational cycle of poverty by helping low income children succeed in school and go to college.

Clinic to College is a "mentoring plus" program serving children and youth ages 9 to 18 in Claremont and the surrounding communities. Each child receives an individual adult mentor. He or she also is assigned an individual adult tutor until he or she achieves a minimum of a "B" grade in all academic classes. The students' families receive social services to help them weather the inevitable crises of poverty, such as the loss of a job or housing, or the lack of medical care.

Clinic to College also has a youth leadership component called "Teen Green." The students of Teen Green create and carry out local projects to protect the environment. Teen Green is open to all Clinic to College participants and also to all students in the community who want to work on behalf of the environment.

Clinic to College is achieving remarkable success. After a year in the program, 90% of the children are receiving "A" and "B" grades in school, and avoiding substance abuse, gang activity and teen pregnancy. All of the graduates of the program have gone to college.
